My Name is Peter Carr & I am the Fund Raising Secretary of the Bury Tandem Club. Age is no barrier to being a member of the Bury Tandem Club. I am one of two members who are approaching 67.
I joined the Club some 15 years ago after reading an advertisement in a local paper. I rode until 2004 when serious illness forced me to retire from active cycling. Right up until the day I finished I was riding from between 40 & 60 miles per week.
We vary the rides enormously and cater for the less fit riders so that they can develop.
I very much miss the camaraderie that I got from the cycling and although I can no longer ride I didn't want to give up my involvement with the club. With this in mind I offered my services to bring together all the fund raising efforts. The club thought this to be a great idea and since I took over we have raised many thousands in much needed funds.
All our tandems are examined every week and are fully maintained by our own mechanic. The mechanic does a great job and all our members can rest assured that the machines are always in first class condition. We do, however, pay him for his highly valued services. This is one of the many reasons why we need to raise funds. The cost of all the spares equipment and maintenance that we need exceeds £4000.00 annually and this really does take some time and effort to raise.
All our members sighted & unsighted take part in our many fundraising activities, we even rope in their ever-willing families.
If you think you can help us in any way - Corporate sponsorship, Donations or Any new ideas about how we may raise funds, we will be extremely grateful.
