Since it was founded by a visually impaired person, Bury Tandem Club's basic aim is to give blind and visually impaired people the same opportunities to cycle as sighted people take for granted. The club realises that for certain visually impaired people, the opportunity for a strenuous cycle ride (40-60 miles over sometimes highly challenging terrain) means far more than just a chance to keep fit. For certain of our visually impaired members, it is the one big social occasion of the week - the only time when we can unwind mentally through strenuous physical exercise.
All our sighted front riders are experienced solo cyclists and ride with the club voluntarily. Riding a tandem safely depends on a sighted front rider and a visually impaired rear rider working well together as a team. This partnership helps to promote a wider understanding of visual impairment related issues and to bring sighted and visually impaired people closer together.
