SPOKE A Newsletter for the members of Bury Tandem Club for the Visually Impaired Charity Reg. No. 1017270 February 2007

Are you fit? Why not drop in at our Club Night?

The Club has a problem with the fitness level of some front and rear riders. It is proposed to trial a Club Night, to be held on a Friday night in the Baden Powell Scout Hut on Millett Street, Bury not far from the Bus Station. All riders are welcome, but especially those front or rear riders who only cycle on Club Run days. There would be opportunities to discuss cycling matters, such as, practising the use of SPD's, finding out how tandems work best and how to improve communication between front and rear pairs, together with the chance to get fitter. We have booked the Hall initially for Friday February 16th. and for Friday March 2nd. from 7pm. The aim is to intersperse 'Keep Fit Training' (using two turbo trainers) with socialising. Refreshments will be available and participants can come and go as they please.

Annual dinner

This will take place on Friday 23rd. February 2007 at the Waterloo Hotel, Manchester Road, Bury. The cost is £17.50 per person and the time is 7.30 for 8 pm. Please come and bring your friends, guests, spouses etc. The main meal will be served plated. The menu is:

Contact Dave Harrison by 16th. February at the very latest with your required menu(s) plus £5 deposit per person. If you are able to donate any Raffle prizes (eg unwanted Christmas presents), they would be most gratefully received.

Are you willing to hose down your tandem during the salty season?

As we are now able to take water from the Workshop's neighbouring property, owned by Joe, the hosing down tandems following a ride was tried out on January 7th. It was a great success! TS10 (Muckoff) cleaning fluid was applied to the frame and wheels, agitated with a brush, avoiding the chain or rear mechanism. It was then gently spray-rinsed with water and the tandem allowed to dry off naturally in the Workshop. Removing salt and mud made the tandems safe from corrosion and ready for a more thorough cleaning by Mike Berry during the week. REMEMBER If you are willing, during winter, to hose down your tandem:

  1. Don't brush the chain or rear mechanism.
  2. Prop the tandem up against the wooden fence away from Joe's house.
  3. Don't leave puddles on Joe's property - it may be Joe's water - but he doesn't want it back!
  4. RIDER COMMITMENT and the ROTA

For the smooth functioning of the Rota, could ALL riders ensure that they ONLY SIGN UP for rides to which they are ABSOLUTELY COMMITTED. Could rear riders also please phone their front riders on Thursday evenings prior to the Sunday ride.

    Home and mobile numbers

There is a copy of all members' phone numbers with this copy of Spoke. If yours is incorrect or you've changed it, please let Joyce know on 01204 840860.

Our Website Belongs to its Members - Make it the way you want it!

According to some sighted viewers, our website lacks colourful action shots and inspiring articles. It takes a sighted person to take such photographs. Do YOU have some? If so, send them in, along with a detailed description of the photo so a visually-impaired person can enjoy it. Send articles / photos / suggestions etc to info@bury-tandem-club.org.uk for publication. Alternatively phone John.

    Expenses

Drivers are reminded that they can claim for expenses incurred (eg petrol) during walk / ride excursions, or collecting riders for Sunday Club Runs, or for Committee Meetings or Club Nights etc. See Dave Harrison, Derek Pritchard or Alan Robinson for details.

    Surplus Cycling Gear?

Have you any cycling gear you no longer use? Why not donate it to the Club? This might include good quality overshoes, waterproofs, helmets or similar items. These will be found in a communal box in the cycle store. Thank you in advance for your donations!

    Swap-shop bulletin board in Spoke

We are considering setting up a sales board within the Club. If you're clearing anything out, why not put it on the board? Please send to www.bury-tandem-club.org.uk for publication in the next newsletter or phone John on 01204 845 956.
