Riderbike Insurance Premiums - new system

At a recent Committee meeting it was decided that, in order to ensure that all riders are insured for Club runs, in future the club would pay all Riderbike insurance premiums up front then individual members would reimburse the club. This will apply to September 2006 premiums onwards. Riders will need to cooperate to make this system work and will need to inform David Jones of any changes from the previous year eg. single membership to family membership etc. Reminders will appear in Spoke before September.

BOLD Tulip Tandem Marathon at Spalding

This is an annual event for visually impaired cyclists organised by Blind Outdoor Leisure Development (BOLD) and takes place on Saturday 22nd. April in Spalding, Lincolnshire. The intention would probably be to go on the Friday and return on the Sunday, probably staying in Bed & Breakfast overnight. The distance cycled is exactly one marathon (26.2 miles) through flat fenlands. Four crews from our Tandem Club have already stated an interest. Would you like to join them? - please contact Derek Pritchard now! . Peter Carr will organise an associated fund-raising 'guesstimate' of the sum of the 3 fastest Bury Tandem Club times.

Riders' Get-together

The first social meeting open to all riders will be held at the Waterloo Hotel on Friday March 31st. at 7.30 pm. Free food will be available. Why not come along and get to know one another better? We will, of course, need some idea of numbers for catering purposes, so please ring Dave Harrison before Friday March 24th. if you are coming.

High visibility clothing for all riders

We are going to spend some of our funds to improve Club safety and give our Club a higher profile. This will take the form of winter tops for NEW riders and lightweight short-sleeved summer tops for ALL riders, all sporting the Club logo and web address. Tops remain the property of the Club but will be issued at no cost to your-selves. In the near future, we will be asking you for your measurements to ensure the correct sizes are ordered.

Tandem Safety

One of our tandems was seen to carry out a risky manoeuvre on Sunday December 4th. 2005. The incident involved a tandem swinging out of Lever Park Avenue, Horwich at considerable speed, causing a car to brake sharply at the junction with the main road. Had an accident occurred, it would have been the fault of the pilot and not the rear rider. The Committee wishes all riders to be aware that they are far more susceptible to severe injury than people protected within a car. Remember also that tandems are not so easily halted or manoeuvrable as solo cycles. There is a need for tandems to be ridden safely, for pilots to be observant, avoid taking risks and for high-visibility clothing to be worn on runs.

Surplus Cycling Gear?

Have you any cycling gear you no longer use? Why not donate it to the Club? The Committee has received a suggestion that members could give any gear surplus to their requirements to the Club for the use of any other members. This might include good quality overshoes, waterproofs, helmets or similar items. These will be found in a communal box in the cycle store. Thank you in advance for your donations!

Things you wish you never knew about cycling

Mike Day, 21, of Manchester and Michel Arets, 27, of Maidstone, Kent, unicycled 901 miles from Land's End, Cornwall to John o'Groats, Caithness from 27 August to 10 September 1986 in 14 days 12 hours 41 minutes.
