SPOKE A Newsletter for the members of Bury Tandem Club for the Visually Impaired Charity Reg. No. 1017270 March, 2004

A Reminder!

If you are an existing front rider, please come to your own Front Riders' Meeting at the Waterloo Hotel, Manchester Road, Bury on Monday March 22nd at 7.30 for 8 pm. This meeting is for YOU to air YOUR views about the Club and particularly to discuss your likes, dislikes and recommendations about Sunday rides in a convivial, easy and informal manner. It is only through meetings such as this that we can improve. Please come if you possibly can. Thank you.

'Lusso' cycle tops for rear and front riders

We are considering purchasing some new good quality cycle tops for all front and rear riders. Samples of Medium, Large and Extra-Large are available at the Club workshop to try on before or after a Sunday Club run or on Fridays between approximately 9 am and 12.30 pm. The tops will be in fluorescent yellow breathable material with a full zip front and three rear pockets with a reflective stripe across the middle. They are designed to be about half-way between a Summer and Winter weight garment. Sizes are Small (36 to 37 in), Medium (38 to 40 in), Large (41 to 42 in) Extra-large (44 to 46 in) and Extra Extra-large (48 to 50 in). Measurements are chest sizes. Would anyone object, if necessary, to contributing up to one third (£9) of the full cost of a top which, with discount, comes to around £27. Please ring Alan before March 7, stating the size you require. (If you've already given Dave Harrison an order, there's no need to ring Alan). An order will be placed after our Committee Meeting on March 8.

Arnside weekend - a reminder

You should all have received recently in the post a handout giving basic information about the proposed Walk and Ride weekend at Arnside Youth Hostel from 4 to 6 June. Please remember that all bookings must be sent to Alan as per instructions in the letter before Friday 5 March. The Met Office has assured us that the roads will be quiet and dry, the air warm and balmy, the sky blue, the number of punctures zero, the home-made bread and Cumberland sausages exquisite and the gentle breeze always behind us. Please come!!! Your support is vital.

Yet another reminder

On each runs list is a date by which you are asked to phone Derek with your availability for rides for the following five weeks. Only 50% of us are phoning by this date, causing problems for Derek's rota organisation. Why not write this reminder in your diary or on your calendar immediately you receive the runs list. Also, would any front rider who is forced by an emergency to cancel at short notice please phone Derek immediately so that remedial action can be taken. Thank you.

Front riders wanted urgently

We desperately need people to ask their friends, workmates, relatives or anyone else they think suitable to volunteer to be a front rider. Our club was originally formed so that visually impaired people could enjoy tandeming once a week throughout the year with the associated benefits of keeping fit, a meal out, socialising, visiting places of interest etc. Last Sunday, 22 February, no-one went tandeming because there were no front riders. If we could get six or seven new front riders to go out once or twice per month, the problem would be solved, providing our existing front riders keep going as normal. Please do your best to help with recruitment. Thanks.

Membership subscriptions

The cost is £25 for the year and subscriptions were due several days ago!! Please make cheques payable to Bury Tandem Club for the Visually Handicapped and send them to David Jones.

Things you wish you never knew about cycling

In the 365 days of 1939, Thomas Edward Godwin of Great Britain (1912-1975) cycled 75065 miles, an average of 205.65 miles per day. He then continued cycling up to 14 May 1940 when he had completed 100000 miles in 500 days.
