SPOKE A Newsletter for the members of Bury Tandem Club for the Visually Impaired Charity Reg. No. 1017270 July, 2002

Availability for tandem rides - vital!

ALL front and rear riders MUST phone Derek on the date given on the top of each runs list. His phone number is 0161 7641239. Without this information, he cannot begin to draw up the next rota. We all have our part to play in this. It takes each one of us one phone call and thirty seconds to phone through our availability for the next five runs. It may take Derek several days and thirty phone calls if he is left to contact each one of us, especially if we're not in. Please make a note of this in your diaries now.

Changes to the rota

If you find that, due to unforeseen circumstances, you cannot actually take part in a ride on a Sunday that you volunteered for, contact Derek directly on 0161 7641239 who will endeavour to find a replacement and, if necessary, alter the rota. Please do not make private arrangements with other riders without telling Derek, as this may cause confusion and lead to a rear rider actually missing out on a ride.

Mobile phones

If you carry a mobile phone on a club run, would you please switch it on from when you get up on Sunday morning until the end of the ride. This will help us all to keep in contact in case of emergencies, breakdowns, cancellations, late arrivals etc.

RiderBike insurance

You must send your RiderBike insurance payment (due in October) to David Jones NO LATER THAN 30 September. His address is: 22 Turks Road, Radcliffe, Manchester, M26 4PU. If you haven't paid by this date, YOU WILL NOT BE INSURED. The club will not stand the cost. Details of the cost will be available in the next edition of Spoke, published approximately 21st September.

Car assisted ride?

We are considering the possibility of a car assisted ride on either Sunday, 15th September or Sunday, 22nd September. It will mean taking people and tandems to Garstang by car. There will be both a short ride and a longer ride from there. It will be a longer day than normal, say from 8 am to 5 pm to allow for the car journeys, loading up the trailer etc. We need to plan now, so please ring Derek before Sunday, 25th August to tell him whether you are interested/available on that date. His number is 0161 7641239. We can then work out from the response whether the ride will take place or not.

Extreme dreams

This is a website set up by a blind person to show some of the crazy activities he has been involved in. These include: bungee jumping from a cable car suspended over a river, white water rafting, paragliding, cliff jumping, mountainboarding, participating in a Royal Marine assault course, sandboarding, scuba diving, skinboarding, tandem sky diving etc. The website address is www.extremedreams.co.uk. If you're interested, why not visit it. It makes very interesting reading!
