Garstang Ride

This was the first club car assisted ride for about two years and began at Garstang. It was a 56-mile round trip, passing through villages such as Scorton and Glasson Dock, stopping for lunch at Knott End. The most memorable part of the ride had to be the weather. It was just perfect for cycling through flattish countryside. Thanks to all for helping to make this such an enjoyable event.

Bury Tandem Club collection

This took place on May 26 between 10 am and 4 pm and involved 25 volunteer members who covered all parts of Bury town centre from the Rock (British Home Stores to Marks and Spencers) to the Mall and Kay Gardens. Volunteers worked in pairs in two-hour shifts. Certain visually impaired fundraisers had guide dogs with them and these turned out to be particularly effective. In total, we raised £934.12, but our special thanks goes to a two-piece band known as "Poor Little Ritch Girl" who were performing in the area at the time and who volunteered to collect for us. While they were performing, they collected the magnificent sum of £75.10 for us and would take nothing in return. This brings the grand total to £1009.22 which is the first time our collection has exceeded £1000. Bearing in mind that no expenses are incurred by any volunteer, all this money goes directly into club funds. Since the average in each collection tin was between £40 and £45, this works out at a collection rate of about £20 per person per hour. This will cover the running costs for the club for a little while! Peter Carr wishes to thank very sincerely everyone who generously gave of their time and effort in this matter and especially Neil Costello for standing in for Peter whilst he attended a wedding. We also thank Peter for organising the collection.

Sponsored ride to Southport

This ride takes place on June 24 and is a 120 kilometre (75-mile) trip to Southport and back to raise funds for the club. All riders will set off at 9 am from Bury Town hall and the mayor will be there to see us off. The Bury Times may also be present. Steve Troughear has organised sponsor forms which everyone who will be riding should have. Well-wishers are wanted to see the group off and to welcome survivors back! There will be a van to collect stragglers.

Things you wish you never knew about cycling

The first practical bicycle was the Velocipede but in March 1861 by Pierre and Ernest Michaux of Rue de Verneuil, Paris.
